On 20 March 2025, the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), led by its 1st Vice President, Dr. Mrs. Emelia Assiakwa, paid a courtesy call at the office of Dr. Mary Awusi, Chief Executive of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) in Accra.
Dr. Mrs. Emelia Assiakwa opened the meeting with a powerful address that underscored the critical importance of strategic collaboration between GNCCI and GFZA. Recognizing the tremendous potential of Ghana’s free zones as catalysts for economic transformation, she stressed that an aligned partnership is essential to overcoming long-standing challenges—from fragmented regulatory frameworks to skill gaps among local businesses. “Our nation stands at the crossroads of opportunity,” Dr. Assiakwa declared, “and it is through meaningful collaboration and proactive reforms that we will unlock the full potential of our business community.”
Her remarks resonated with a call to action for all stakeholders—government, private sector, and international partners alike—to work together in creating a business environment that not only meets but exceeds global standards.
Central to the discussion was the need to review and modernize policies that govern Ghana’s free zones. Dr. Assiakwa highlighted initiatives aimed at streamlining regulatory frameworks to create a more business-friendly climate, which are vital for attracting both local and international investments. In tandem, capacity building was presented as a cornerstone for sustainable growth. With a particular focus on empowering the nation’s youth and emerging entrepreneurs, the GNCCI Junior Chamber is championing programs that include comprehensive apprenticeship initiatives and strategic partnerships with educational institutions. These efforts are designed to equip the next generation with the skills necessary to drive innovation and meet the demands of the modern marketplace.
Dr. Mary Awusi, CEO of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, responded by reaffirming GFZA’s commitment to creating an environment conducive to trade and investment. Emphasizing that free zones serve as vital engines of economic growth, Dr. Awusi detailed ongoing efforts to refine regulatory processes and enhance operational efficiencies within these zones. “Our mission is to ensure that every business operating in our free zones has access to the resources and support it needs to succeed on the global stage,” she stated.
Dr. Awusi also highlighted the Authority’s focus on capacity-building initiatives designed to address skills shortages and promote best practices among local businesses. She underscored the importance of robust training programs aligned with international standards, which will undoubtedly boost Ghana’s export competitiveness.
Dr. Awusi noted that GFZA is fully committed to supporting GNCCI’s advocacy and capacity-building initiatives. “We are prepared to work hand-in-hand with the Chamber to drive the policy reforms necessary to transform our trade landscape,” she remarked, citing joint efforts in capacity building and youth empowerment as key to future success.
The strategic partnership between GNCCI and GFZA is set to play a critical role in positioning Ghana as a regional hub for trade and innovation, thereby attracting investment and nurturing the growth of homegrown enterprises.
