GNCCI CONFERS HONORARY AWARD ON DR. BAWUMIA FOR CHAMPIONING DIGITIZATION
The 3rd edition of the Chamber Business Awards
was held on Saturday, 23rd November, 2019 at the Accra International Conference Center under the theme, “Digitizing the Ghanaian Economy for Competitive Edge in Globalized Markets”, which attracted key personalities in the country. The awards scheme seeks to recognize and acknowledge businesses and personalities who have excelled in the field of their businesses as well as contributed towards the economic development of the country.
In his special address, the Special Guest of Honour, His Excellency Dr Alhaji Mahamadu Bawumia acknowledged that the theme for the celebration was apt since it was in line with government’s vision in building and formalizing the Ghanaian economy through digitization.
The Vice President commended the GNCCI for its continuous pivotal role it plays in the development and growth of the Private Sector Community and expressed government’s commitment to pursue the right policy mix that would enhance the growth and prosperity for the Private Sector with the exceptional relationship the Chamber has with government.
Over the years the GNCCI has made significant contributions towards the development of the Ghanaian economy by facilitating partnership between local and foreign businesses, building the capacities of local businesses and the promotion of products and services through their Business to Business meetings, Trades and Investments etc.
In his welcome address, Nana Dr. Appiagyei Dankawoso I (President, GNCCI) emphasized that achieving global competitiveness is a shared responsibility which requires commitment towards building the capacities of businesses to be innovative and responsive to changing trends in a competitive globalized economy. He applauded government’s position to support the Private Sector as frontline actors in leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) agreement to expand the production of goods and services.
Nana Dr. Dankawoso I conferred an Honorary Membership Award to the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia for his immense contribution in digitizing the Ghanaian economy which is critical for private sector growth, and to encourage him to do more for the business community. The conferment was accompanied with a Citation and a decorated sash.
The citation acknowledged that Dr Bawumia is noted and acclaimed globally as a renowned Economist, Lecturer, Researcher, a Monetary Policy Advisor, among others. His desire to see the Ghanaian economy digitized saw him fend off various oppositions to ensure that the Paperless Port System is introduced at the ports. “This move has been singled out by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), as a key contributing factor to the increase in revenue at the ports”.
The citation also noted other initiatives undertaken in digitizing the Ghanaian economy including Mobile Money Interoperability “[…] that made it possible for money transfers from one mobile money networks to another, from bank accounts or e-zwich account and to mobile money phones”, and Digital Property Addressing System.
“As an acknowledgement and recognition of the work you have done, and continue to do, to ensure that the Ghanaian economy is digitized in ways that make it possible for businesses to compete favourable across the globe, the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry presents to you, H. E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, this Citation.”
