GNCCI Swears in Arbitration and Legal Committee to Strengthen ADR Mechanisms

Accra, August 19, 2024 – The Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) proudly announces the successful inauguration of the newly appointed members of its Arbitration and Legal Committee. The swearing-in ceremony, held this morning at the GNCCI National Secretariat in North Dzorwulu, Accra, marks a step forward in the Chamber’s ongoing efforts to enhance alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms for its members and the wider business community.

The Arbitration and Legal Committee, a specialised sub-committee within the GNCCI Council, comprises distinguished legal professionals with deep expertise in arbitration and dispute resolution. This formation aligns with Article 20(E) of the GNCCI Constitution 2020, which mandates the creation of an Arbitration Committee. This Committee includes a Vice President of the Chamber, certified arbitrators, a legal practitioner experienced in dispute resolution, the Chief Executive Officer of GNCCI, a representative from the Branch Chairpersons, and any co-opted member possessing relevant expertise.

Key Roles of the Arbitration and Legal Committee:

  • Strategic Legal Advocacy: The Committee will provide crucial legal expertise and advocacy, guiding the GNCCI on legal reforms and policies that could impact Ghana’s business landscape.
  • Expert Legal Guidance: Tasked with offering expert legal advice, the Committee will support the Chamber’s Executives, Committees, and members on complex legal matters, ensuring the GNCCI’s leadership is well-informed and equipped to navigate legal challenges.
  • Regular Legal Consultations: The Committee will engage in regular consultations with the Chamber’s leadership, addressing emerging legal concerns to maintain compliance with all legal and regulatory standards.
  • Mediation and Arbitration: A core responsibility of the Committee is to mediate and arbitrate disputes involving the Chamber or its members, promoting harmony within the GNCCI and safeguarding the interests of the business community.
  • Upholding Legal Interests: The Committee is dedicated to protecting the legal interests of the GNCCI and its members. By providing comprehensive legal services, promoting regulatory adherence, and strengthening the Chamber’s legal framework, the Committee will play a pivotal role in maintaining the Chamber’s integrity.

The GNCCI recognises Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) as an essential tool for resolving disputes efficiently and cost-effectively, outside the traditional court system. The Chamber understands that unresolved commercial disputes can disrupt business operations and erode trust within the business community.

Dr. Clement Osei-Amoako, President of the GNCCI, congratulated the newly sworn-in members of the Arbitration and Legal Committee, expressing confidence in their ability to steer the Chamber towards greater advocacy for businesses across Ghana. He affirmed that the Committee’s expertise would be instrumental in ensuring a fair and just business environment.

The establishment of the Arbitration and Legal Committee underscores the GNCCI’s commitment to upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and transparency in all its endeavours. The Committee’s work is expected to significantly enhance the Chamber’s capacity to resolve conflicts amicably, contributing to a more conducive and trustworthy business environment in Ghana.
